I think Java WebStart is one of the great technologies to help you with client-side Java applications. If you're new to JNLP and Java WebStart, here's some info on what to look for.
The home page for java webstart
http://java.sun.com/products/javawebstart
http://java.sun.com/products/javawebstart/developers.html
Articles on Java Webstart
1. From IBM Developerworks
http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/library/j-webstart/index.html
2. From Javaworld
http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/jw-07-2001/jw-0706-webstart_p.html
3. From JavaPro
http://www.fawcette.com/Archives/premier/mgznarch/javapro/2000/13iss00/ds0013/ds0013p.asp
Hope this helps.
