JavaTM Web Start -- a technology for simplifying deployment of Java applications-- gives you the power to launch full-featured applications with a single click from your Web browser. You can now download and launch applications, such as a complete spreadsheet program or an Internet chat client, without going through complicated installation procedures.

That is a good place to start to get general information on JWS.

hi Khuram,
v don't 've mind to bother about level of questions :-)
u can go to - here
to find out more information about the JavaWebStart. if you follow "Documentation" and "FAQ" etc links on that page it will give u more idea..
just to brief about the whole picture,
- as all of us know there are mainly two types in java programs
1. application
2. applet
- as you might already know java applet runs within the browser and face some browser specific issues sometimes
- the benefit of the stand alone application is that we dont have to worry about browser related issues for the applet we might have
now, as above points mentions it might be more helpful to have a stand alone application in some cases but how do we deliver our application to the end users? we have two options,
1. we use a InstallSheild wizard to package our application
-here we might run into problems of CLASSPATH and some other issues on the destination machine
2. we have some other way by which we are able to just deploy our application JAR file etc on our server and get downloaded and launch application automatically...that would be great, right??
this 2nd option is implemented via Java Web Start architecture.
JavaWebStart takes care of downloading our application on the client machine and execute it.
hope this helps
