In some versions of webstart, a console similar to a dos window is displayed when the application is launched. Is there an option that I can set so that this window will be displayed for all versions of webstart.

Launch JWS Application Manager, select File >> Preferences from menu, click on "Advanced" tab; and check "Show Java Console" checkbox. I doubt if it can be done from the application itself.
