I am very fascinated by game programming even if it's not easy. Why don't we form a group and build a 2D platform video game. Let me know if anyone is interested. Thanks

Cool, I'm interested too -- don't have much time but could help out a bit. What kind of game, kind of like mario or sonic the hedgehog?

Thank you all. Well before we can start you need to get the book:
Developing Games in Java -- by David Brackeen
This book will help you or us a ton. Please let me know what you think.
Thanks

I've read David's book. I found it be an excellent book. If you want to look at something in development you can take a look at my game on java.net.

https://molez-resurrection.dev.java.net/

It is not yet suitable for even an alpha release, but it is somewhat playable. It's not really a platform game, but it uses much of what is in the book. The source should be available from CVS to view.

I haven't worked on it in a while, been busy, but I hope to get back to around two months from now.

I believe, before going to Game in Java or any language, one should study the fundamentals of games.I believe these books could be useful as starting point.
Physics for Game developers
AI for Game Developers
This could aslo be helpful

I am up for it, I have been looking at game programming lately. I have started reading AI for Game Developers and brackeen's book. I am developing a 2D game but I am using .net and C# for that (it is already existing game but I am coding it from scratch so I can learn), but I have been Java developer for a while now. I have few ideas of my own which I would eventually like to explore once I learn a bit more about game development, graphics, directX etc. We can create a mailing list or something and talk about how to get started.

I have been developing in Java for 2 years, and I just submitted my SCJD application for grading. My next step is game development in Java, and I have begun working on that for a while. I have two books on game development. One is the Absolute Beginner's book. It's really not too great of a book if someone wants to learn Java, but they teach you how to make games such as tetris, minesweeper, sprites, etc. So I'm finishing up that right now, and then I am going to start working through brackeen's book. You can see my email address next to my name on this post, if you guys would be interested in having me join!
