Interactive learning tool with animation

Hi all,

I'm planning to start a project for building an interactive cd rom for kids maths learning.

In this project i will have to implement animations like cartoons that talk and sound ect...so that to make it attractive for kids to learn math while having fun.

I need your advice to point me to some open source projects that do the same thing so i can have an idea on how to start my project.

what are the java topics that i must master to get it done ? i guess this will involve some java gaming right ?

can you point me to some java libraries that helps in animation of cartoons and so.
