Java 1.3?

Apparently, the new Java 1.3 that is currently in some kind of beta, is supposed to kick ass on everything else.
Anyone know how or why?

I use 1.3 now and its speed is really good. Java has come a long way since 96 and its speed is fast enough to where I forget applications were written in Java and just go on about my business. I use a few java programs that are fairly large and there speed is very descent when you compare them to other native applications which preform the same tasks.
Does anyone know if there is another VM out there that is faster than the one which ships with Suns JDK 1.3? That is free for download?
