I have an Applet in which i use JTables and create my own table models extending AbstractTableModel and overriding the appropriate methods.I observed that the methods getValueAt() and setValueAt() are called several times for each entry in the JTable. What is the reason for that? Will this not degrade the performance as my application then remains busy for a longer time than it should be ?

Wilson & Kesselman cover this in their book (Java Platform Performance: Strategies and Tactics.). The relevant chapter, chapter 10, is online. There's a link from the tips page at my site
