compile time vs. runtime error/exception

first, thanks to all who have answered my other posts.
second, if i don't specifically know "off-hand", how can i tell whether a block of code will give me a compile time or runtime error/exception? is one representative of logic(runtime) while the other is a more syntax(compile time)?
