Please suggest ways to tackle this

I have a realtime enquiry that needs to be handled from java platform to a legacy(mainframe) system.
The data from the mainframe is required to pull to the frontend (servelts/jsp) via a transaction running on the mainframe. The team at legacy said that this might be done using MQ and I am not sure how and what exactly is required on our end to do this...using JMS synchronous messaging? OR if this is the best solution?
Also, the other option we have is to do screen-scrapping the 3090 screen but we dont want to do this unless there is NO OTHER comparable option.
Thanks
Raj
