I am using Sun's jdk1.4.1_01 on a Linux box with 4GB RAM, and I cannot start java with a heap larger than 1.7GB without getting a memory error. I searched around and saw something hinting that the OS swap space needs to be at least as large as the max heap size. I don't know if this is true, but I added a 2GB swap file to complement the 2GB swap partition there already, but it didn't get me anywhere. What am I missing?
