why my memory use is not equals ?

My java application run in NT , In the TaskManager show the java.exe only use 140M memory , but the total memory use about 700M, why to cal the memory used in my application? And how to reduce memory use?
who can give me some advice?

in the taskManager show the total Memory used.it show used 700M.but the java.exe only show 140M.but the garbage collector collect the memeory , the java.exe only used 70M, but when I am exit the java applciation . the taskmanager show only use 225M.why the java.exe only show so little memeoy?
