Can anyone suggest a free (or inexpensive) software for load testing the Internet apps? Essentially, I am looking for an equivalent of Load Runner. What I need is to record a sequence of steps in the browser, run the script with multiple simulated users, and see the performance stats.

I did that using the HttpClient toolkit - http://jakarta.apache.org/commons/httpclient/
There is also the JUnit based http://httpunit.sourceforge.net/ HttpUnit toolkit which I have not used.

I used The Grinder over the summer on a load testing assignment. Pretty easy-to-use. You can either write your tests as Java classes or Python scripts.
