Report engine performance suggestions

I hope this is a good place to ask this type of question. I'm working on a java app that currently uses Crystal for reporting. This works fine 99% of the time.

Users don't like that on a couple reports, that are basically data dumps, report generation takes several minutes. These reports just categorize the data, possibly a couple thousand pages.

Crystal has to generate the entire report. Does anyone have any experience with any reporting engines that might handle large reports in a more acceptable manor?

Thanks,

PF

did you think about asynchronous generation?
prehaps a small cardinality of the reports being generated can allow this way of optimizing the response time

while(true){
this.put(BeerFactory.newInstance());
}
