I would really like to have help understanding, from the ground up (in its entirety), how portals and portlets work. I'm not talking about specifications or IDEs that make it easy, I want to know the low-level blood and guts of this technology, because I want to understand what is going on behind the scenes of the (buggy) IDE I'm using (IBM Websphere Portal), which many times doesn't seem to logically work like (I believe) it should.
I'm still new to Java and the J2EE architecture, and have no formal training (books and the internet are about it), and nobody that I can ask (I asked one of the other developers for help, and he seriously asked me what a porlet was, not deadpan humor, but in complete honesty)!
This is a plea for help, and I'm very sorry if this is verbose, but I need to understand this, and I need to do it quickly, because I feel as if, and not without good cause, my superiors are getting impatient with my results (or lack thereof).
Specifically what I am asking for is:
an in-depth explanation of the structure of portlets and portals
any good resources (I'm tired of IBM, and wanting to go open source
somebody who is willing to help teach and mentor me in this field

Start with weblogic portal server. Its freely available plus you can find lots of documentation on weblogic from bea website.
I thank you for your suggestion, it's just that I'm trying to fully understand the basics of how everything goes together, not just create portlets and portals (which I'm trying to learn as well).

Hi,
If you are new to Java, i guess diving inot portal right away will be diffcult. Just a give a brief reading to J2EE architectuture to understanbd different component. Just google it and you will lot of articles.But i always prefer Sun's guide.
Then you have read JSR-168 specification and trying buidling upon it.
But i think, you are lost various things the IDE is doing automatically and how there are related to portal and portlets.
One more thing i have to tell you. All the vendors like IBM, BEA and JBoss have different style of developing portals confirming JSR-168 specification.
If your company is using IBM then concentrate more on IBM documentation.If there is general concept you are trying to understand then you refer to any vendor documentation.
BTW, i have just started and i am using JBoss.

BTW on the IBM web-site i have some videos, try those out.
