Hi,
We can customize liferay portal to meet our organization demands
i already worked on liferar 3.5.x i thnk.
it has plenty of predefined portlets and skins so we can configure
to meet our requirements.

customization documents also avilable in the same site i think.
but before customization make sure that you are comfortable
with Xml,ejb. So that while customizing the portal you can understand what
is going on

Yes, Liferay can be customized. I have worked on Liferay 3.0 .

Its very good for building quick portlet based application.
