I actually have a tutorial on my portlet book on creating an Ajax portlet. They're pretty kewl, and they really take the stress off of the Portal Server.
Pick up any standard AJAX tutorial, and just code the content spot the same way. Your AJAX portlet should deploy to WebSphere with no bother.
One caveat is that the web based resource, be it a JSP or Servlet that your AJAX call relies upon must be in the same war file. If your content resource is outside of the current war, you won't be able to address it.

when my friend tried ajax with ibm protlets, and response comming as HTML code, but proper response is comming when normal servlet is invoked...
