Problem with datagram sockets

Dear All,
I have a dial up machine in which a java server is hosted.The client connects to the server using datagram sockets and transaction takes about one minute for completion.
But when i used a "c" socket instead of java datagram socket at server side, transaction was completed within around twenty seconds.What could be the problem??Is the delay mandatory??
pls help..!!!
