Problem while running client outside the firewall........

Hi all,
I am trying to develop messenger.It run fine on intranet but when I run it on outside firewall (ie not in intranet) it gives exception that host is unreachable but if I ping it on that m/c where i gives exception it ping .But problem while running the client.
Why such problem occours? Tell me any alternate solution for that one.
