how can i delete a resource using http?

The http protocol supports a delete command but I do not see this supported by the URL class.
Any suggestions on how I can delete a file using the HTTP protocol from within java?

I don't think the DELETE method is really supported anywhere (correct me if I'm wrong), although you could conceivably write a servlet that supported it.
Depending on what you want to achieve, you might want to look into a WebDAV (aka Web Folders) implementation such as Apache Slide.
