http tunneling

Is it possible to invoke a method of an applet from a servlet using http tunneling.
Although i know http tunneling is mainly used for applet to send http request to servlet. And the reason why i am not going for rmi is that i am told that some version of jdk do not support rmi for applet-servlet communication.
