What is the purpose of Java Secure Socket Extension (JSSE)?.

JSSE allows Java programs to communicate across cryptographically secure channels, both with other Java programs and with other software that uses the same encryption protocols (generally SSL-based things like SSH and the secure web protocol HTTPS).
