Hi, welcome to the ranch!

What is your protocol between client & server ... RMI, sockets, EJB, other? That will make a big difference in the answer.

A good question is never answered. It is not a bolt to be tightened into place but a seed to be planted and to bear more seed toward the hope of greening the landscape of the idea. John Ciardi

Have you tried reading a file and writing ot the server's output stream, reading from the clients input stream and writing to a file? If you have some "almost working" code, post it here and we'll see what we can find.
