The sheriffs and I spent a few weeks talking about appointing new sheriffs. The number of unique users per day has nearly doubled in the last few months, and limiting excellent bartenders to just one or two forums just seems downright goofy! These three bartenders have made phenominal contributions to JavaRanch and I'm please as punch to give each of them a shiny new tin star.

Cool, three new people to blame. Congratulations to all of you. You have all made immense contributions to the Ranch, and really deserve this. Use your new found powers for good, y'hear.
<evil laugh>ha ha ha ha ha</evil laugh> First... you foolishly let me in the Moderator's Only forum -- thinking I would help all of you to take over the world. Little did you know my master plan was to play nicey-nicey, become a sheriff so I'd have all the power and be able to take it over without you! hmmmm.... maybe I should have waited to tell y'all that til after I found out how to use my new found powers.... oh well, guess my cover's blown Thanks for the star! I'm psyched to help out around even more. [ September 11, 2003: Message edited by: Jessica Sant ]

Well I can certainly agree with choosing Jessica and Valentin...

Me! Jessica and Valentin make sense, but I'm still amazed that I'm in this group. But I'm pleased that the subliminal hints I've been lacing my posts with for the past year have indeed finally paid off. Thanks to everyone! I'm really honored to be part of this. And of course thanks most of all to Paul Wheaton, without whom there would be no javaranch. Just stop and think about that for a moment... where do you think Valentin, Jessica, Rob, Thomas, Map and all would be hanging out right now, if not here? Just imagine the sites and forums they'd be haunting... scary! (I KNOW where Bert would be ) But I have a little disclaimer: Valentin and Jessica have to start working their butts off right now, but my official 'swearing in' won't be for another three weeks. Or Tim O'Reilly might personally show up at my door and kick my a**. But once that book is out of our hands, Bert and I have sworn to keep a more reasonable schedule from that point on. So for the next three weeks, I get to enjoy all the privileges, and wear the little outfit and everything (Cindy -- where'd you get that hat?), but I won't start my true sheriff-y duties until the book is done. cheers and thanks again! Kathy (now where did I put those handcuffs...)

Well... What can I say except... ...Thank you very much Paul and also thanks to all the sheriffs who spoke for me I'll do my very best to honor the ranch as much as I can. Congratulations to you Kathy and Jess. You are great contributors of the ranch. Keep up the great work But I have a little disclaimer: Valentin and Jessica have to start working their butts off right now --Kathy Sierra Aha, I thought I had mine already working off Just put the stuff in the pipe. Yeehaaaaaaa !!!
Sheriffs do what bartenders do, but in all the forums. And they get the keys to the whole saloon, so they can change all sorts of stuff. They also get the keys to the static pages (which reminds me, Jim, could you please make sure that the new sheriffs have said keys?) Oh yeah, sheriffs have the ability to disable accounts, change names, signatures, titles and things like that. Sheriffs often head up special projects. Basically they do what they did before only now they have more tools.

Wel deserved congrats One thing I can't figure out though. I thought cowgirl outranked sheriff. So didnt Kathy get demoted?
Kathy can change her title to whatever she wants whenever she wants.

Essentially, cowgirl was and is an honorary title, reflecting the fact that she started JavaRanch originally. But our posting software didn't actually give her any extra privieges until we made her a bartender, and now as a sheriff she gets even more. She still has the honorary cowgirl title, but now has actual power to go with it. (Insasmuch as any of us have "power" here.) [ September 12, 2003: Message edited by: Jim Yingst ]

Handcuffs? Cute little outfits? Power games?
Do sheriffs get keys to the dungeon too? Talk about priveleges!!

All right, the power games are common knowledge. But how did Pauline find out about the other two?
