Instant messaging using RMI and Sockets

Hi, I am building a chat server which has the following classes: PresenceServer which is the remote interface, PresenceServerImpl which implements the PresenceServer interface, ClientRegistration which is used to get Client information(name, host, port) and ChatClient which is run by end-users to see who is online and have on-line discussion with other users. The clients exchange messages directly with other clients via java Sockets and use Java RMI to determine the location of other ChatClients. I compiled all the classes without any error. But I get an error when I try to run the PresenceServerImpl class. It gives the following exception:" refused
java.rmi.ConnectException:Connection refused to exception is: refused
at Method)"........
and so on. I cut short the error description as it is too long. I hope someone could soon tell me the reason for the error.
Thanks in advance,
