gzip Compress XML-RPC Datagrams, How

i am using an instance of the XmlRpcClient Class to access a Servlet that
hosts an instance of the XmlRpcServer Klass.
Both are from the org.apache.xmlrpc Package.
Is there a way to gzip-compress the xml-datagrams (or at least the answer, from the Servlet).
Since the answers are usually between 20 and 60 k i am willing to accept the time penalty for the compression/decompression cycle.
To be more specific, is there a way to set the http-header field
accept-encoding:gzip when using the 2 classes.
Or is there any other magic involved?
Pointers, tips even complete solutions are welcome.
