In terms of existing technology, FTP is a well understood protocol with Java support if you can treat your data like a file or collection of files. I would imagine you can get an FTP server for your remote machine for just about any operating system.

What are your constraints in terms of network bandwidth, data volume, network reliability, security, etc.?

Thanks Bill

The data should be secure . The volume can go to any extent. The connection will be a reliable high speed connection..

I would certainly try FTP first since it should be easy to get running on your remote machine. The Apache commons project has a Java client toolkit you could use on the data collecting side.
