Can any one point me to a sample example showing a database interaction with JSF application.

It's fully transparent for the JSF. You can put the plain JDBC commands in the backing bean or even use Hibernate. To pass the data between the JSF application and the database, it's a good practice to use DTO's - Data Transfer Objects. Basic example:
