selectManyCheckbox conversion error

Hi there,

I want to put the responses from a selectManyCheckbox to a hashmap in a backing bean:

    
<h:selectManyCheckbox value="#{SessionBean.hashmap.key17}">
  <f:selectItem itemValue="1" itemLabel="1" />
  <f:selectItem itemValue="2" itemLabel="2" />
</h:selectManyCheckbox>

I use this in a series of question forms, and it works very well for radio buttons etc, but when I use a multi select input I get an error:

summary=(Conversion Error setting value '1 2' for '#{SessionBean.hashmap.key17}'. ),


Any help on why this error is thrown would be most appreciated, and if anybody has a solution even better!
