You know.. those little images that people can have below their names. Is Javaranch going to allow that? I'd sure like to have a pic of my pickup truck with the confederate flag and a crate of budweiser..

as for the "why? -- avatars get out of hand. They certaintly wouldn't lend to the nice, peaceful, relaxed, professional-ish image we have now.

We've been working on moving JavaRanch to servlet-based software. At least one of the options supports avatars, and we had it turned on for a while in our test installation. By an overwhelming majority, the JavaRanch staff felt that it should be turned off. They take up too much space, are distracting, and as Jess says, they're less professional lookin' than the Moose.
