when to use hibernate.properties ?

Hi all.
I'm using Hibernate with Tomcat server and MySQL server.
my web application is using hibernate.cfg.xml file, should I use hibernate.properties file ?
would you tell me when to use hibernate.properties file ?

The following is from Hibernate in Action:
Both the hibernate.properties and hibernate.cfg.xml files provide the same function: to configure Hibernate. Which file you choose to use depends on your xyntax preference. It's even possible to mix both options...
