using soap to download large files...

Hi, would it be appropriate to use a soap web service as a service to download potentially large zip files (typically 4-5 mb)? and if this
is an ok design would the soap type be InputStream or mabe just byte[] ?

Use SOAP with attachments instead. That way you can use the native binary file format and not get the 33% expansion of base-64 encoding. Your performance will be significantly better due to the XML parser not having to parse those huge files as well.
