I am just starting to investigate consuming web services with Java. Can I write an app that runs on J2SE 1.3 that consumes a web service or does it only work on J2EE? Thanks for your help.

You can talk to a web service with J2SE. See http://www.google.com/apis/ , for instance.

Take a look at the Axis implementation.
If you download it (it's free), you'll have a lot of J2SE samples
