SOAP has the following features:
Protocol independence
Language independence
Platform and operating system independence
Support for SOAP XML messages incorporating attachments (using the multipart MIME structure)
What does "Protocol independence" mean? Does it mean that SOAP can work on HTTP,SMTP etc.

Exactly. The independence concerns the transport protocol -- in theory it doesn't matter how the SOAP envelopes are delivered between endpoints.

In my SOAP book I showed examples of moving SOAP message by Java Message Service, JavaSpaces, and by email. Unfortunately many of the articles and the W3C docs on SOAP assume you are using nothing but HTTP so people get the idea that it is the only transport method.
