Microsoft invented BPEL ! - news to me.

The writer of that article got it wrong. Microsoft did NOT invent BPEL. BPEL was co-invented by Microsoft, IBM, and others as a result of merging IBM's WSFL (Web Services Flow Language) with a similar Microsoft language.
In fact, if you look at the BPEL specification you'll see that there are 4 IBMer's on the committee and only 3 people from Microsoft.
