Developing JWS is good for starters.

You can have a look the WS book review panel of Javaranch http://www.javaranch.com/bunkhouse/SOAP.jsp

I cannot find any "Beginning JWS" book on Amazon.

Is it out of date?

You can search using 'beginning java web services', not 'beginning jws'.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
