Inserting signed SAML into header

I am trying to insert a signed SAML assertion in the soap header.
However, when I insert it the xml is in a slightly differant format than the way it was created. This invalidates the signature.
Is there a way to insert something directly into the SOAPHeader as is without haing the message modified at all?
