how do i capture the values?

hello referring to this tutorial http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/technicalArticles/wireless/midpservlets/
under secondmidletservlet, instead of getting the record value of the example qusay i would recieve the number of characters sent.. how do i solve this error and get the value the user keys in?
