In some ways, the MIDP book is really a continuation of the J2ME book. The second in a J2ME "series", so to speak. The writing style is the same, but the content is different. The MIDP book is much more detailed than the J2ME book, since it focuses almost exclusively on MIDP programming. It's also more current, obviously, since it came out a year after the J2ME book. If you're into MIDP programming I think you'll find it useful for a number of reasons: 1) lots of examples, 2) detailed descriptions of all the classes, 3) a handy CLDC/MIDP quick reference at the back that lists all the methods for all the classes and also provides some commentary as to what's different. That said, the J2ME book is still a good choice for a complete overview of J2ME and an examination of the history of small device Java programming. The MIDP book only covers a small bit of this material, just enough to get you grounded, but it covers its specific area in much more detail. Well, we seem to have at least two J2ME book authors answering questions in this forum. I am considering purchasing a book. Should I buy Eric's book (most current J2ME book available) or John's book (available only in January). I wonder??
