DateField display variations

Has anyone else noticed that the way in which the J2ME DateField is displayed in the Sun's Wireless Toolkit emulators and books such as Knudsens is completely different from how the DateField actually displays on most phones.
Sun's emulator shows a calendar layout for editing dates and an actual clock for editing. Most of the phones I have seen only show text entry fields to modify date and times.
Does anyone know why this is or know of any phones in which the DateField display is similar to that of the WTK and the one seen in Knudsen's book?

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
