If the "type" of a Java phone is defined by the MIDP version it supports, then there are 2 types of Java phones... Most products on the market are MIDP 1.0 but at least Nokia has one model out supporting MIDP 2.0 (Nokia 6600).

Phew, wish I knew
MIDP 2.0 is so new that I haven't had the time to learn about the new features. Check out the What's new page on java.sun.com.

There's a good document from Nokia that steps you through the differences between MIDP 1.0 and 2.0. Have a look at http://www.forum.nokia.com/main/1,6566,1_0_10,00.html and read the MIDP 2.0 Introduction.

You may want to also check out the 2nd edition of Jonathan Knudsen's book, "Wireless Java: Developing with J2ME". This book has in depth coverage of MIDP 2.0 and how it is different from 1.0.
