Why my UI code can't work ?!

The following code can go through compile, but can't display properly on the emulators.
This project is about a frontend to connect to a backend database. I havn't complete the backend yet. Is this the reason that I can't get the proper display of UI?

Yes, you answered your own question.
Here is why, in your own code.

See you try to open a connection, and catch an exception which calls destroyApp and notifyDestroyed, killing your MIDlet before it even gets to the setCurrent call.
