I'm trying to make a custom GUI for a J2ME application. Does anyone know of any good books or links on this?

If you are talking about customizing the standard lcdui widgets, most of them are final classes and hence not extendable. In MIDP 2, the CustomItem was introduced, and there's a nice little tutorial over at sun:

Truth be told, j2me was not written with ease-of-gui-customization in mind. The lcdui is certainly not swing, its not even AWT.
