MIDlet Setting Date

I am trying to pre-set a date in a MIDlet. The code seems to run but the value is not set. Any help would be appreciated. Code below.

I am using IBM WSDD 5.7 and there appears to be a bug in IBM's J9 JVM. If you append(date) before setting date all works.
