Hi Java micro folks,

We are Using a Sony Ericsson PCMCIA card(GC89) as a GPRS modem in our tablet PC application. One of the requirement is to show connection strength in the application. Default software that got installed with the card "Wireless Manager" has this feature.

Java has two flavours in J2ME for micro devices
1. Kjava: CLDC/MIDP for mobile phones
2. Pjava: Personal java for connected device like PDA

I need some specific information as which specific API I should use to retrieve the GPRS/GSM signal strength. I guess it would be in pjava.

One more point: Here we need to communicate with device which is acting as Modem. SO we may not require to use j2ME.

Hi,
Well upto my knowledge, kJava doesn't have an api to get the signal strength. I have not come across a method or a procedure which yeilds this. The reason would be that Java ME doesn't expose device specific features like this. Specialy accessing the hardware.
I have not worked with personal java hence I don't know whether it is available in it.
I did some googling on this topic and in one forum it was stated that it is possible to get the device specific features through SNMP.
regards
