I'm preparing a presentation about "java processors" for university. Seems to be a nice and interesting topic. But I have trouble finding useful information. Most of the stuff I've found so far is too superficial. I need information about the architecture, how it works etc.
Can any of you provide me with some useful documentary, manuals, links etc. concerning java processors in general and picoJava in particular?
IMO, I think that the reason there is so little info, is because it wasn't that great of an idea. The whole idea of a Java processor, is based on a theory that eliminating the JIT will drastically improve performance. Unfortunately, there are two problems with this...
First, modern Java applications are not short lived. Even web applications uses Java components that stay resident to handle many many requests. In this regard, the time for the JIT is amortized across the many requests throughout the day, weeks, months, etc.
Second, the JIT does more than just compile bytecodes to native codes. It will monitor a running application, and optimize accordingly, reoptimizing as needed. With a JIT, a long running program can out perform a natively compiled application.
