There is nothing in the JDK that is specific to producer and consumers... but the threading and collection classes are generally used to implement producer / consumer designs.

Take a look at the JavaDoc for JDK 1.5 BlockingQueue. There is some neat stuff in there that may apply nicely. If you are supposed to write your own it will give you some food for thought at least.
