Appletviewer throwing NoClassDefFoundError

I am compiling and running applets with the jdk1.3 on NT Workstation. They compile correctly, but when i call appletviewer I get NoClassDefFoundError. I compiled in directory "A" using a .jar file after typing:
set classpath=.;habeans.jar;
And the program compiles without error (This .jar file is in the same directory). It is only when I run this applet in the viewer do I get this error, claiming it can't find the classes that I know are part of habeans.jar. What is going on here? Why are the classes found at compile-time and not at run-time? My "path" variable points to C:\jdk1.3\bin. Help!
