Experience!
Val just wrote up a nice article about certification and some common misconception about certification. Take a look here for the atricle.
Don't expect to get a job just because you're certified. Even if you're certified, if you don't have any experience, that doesn't mean a lot to a potential employer (at least, it wouldn't to me, if I was a potential employer). Certification means that you know the syntax and the semantics of the language - it doesn't mean you're a good programmer. Therefore, I don't think you can rely on that piece of paper to say that you're a good programmer.
I know, it's the old catch-22 thing - I have no experience, but how can I get experience without having a job? The best thing to do is just to start coding. Do what you need to do in order to learn how to be an effective Java programmer. If that means creating projects for yourself, fine. Perhaps you can find some work on SourceForge. Anything to get some experience and show something to a potential employer. I'd be awfully wary about hiring someone based only on the programmer's certification.
Don't get me wrong, I think the certification process is great (after all, I took the time to go through it), but I think on common misconception is that getting certified will get you a job - it doesn't really work that way - not in today's market.
I hope that helps,
Corey
