Inner Class Visibility

I'm having self doubts about this; could someon assuage my fears or set me straight.
Is it the case that an enclosing class will always have access to the (private) members of its inner class. In otherwords, variable visibility for outer/inner classes is only an issue when trying to access the members of the enclosing class from the inner class.
Is my thinking about this correct?
