It says "r" "rw" "rws" "rwd" can be given as arguments to a RandomAccessFile when created.Well it again says..
"rws" Open for reading and writing, as with "rw", and also require that every update to the file's content or metadata be written synchronously to the underlying storage device.

Can anybody tell me what this meta data and files content ?.. were only "rw" and "r" allowd earlier ??

It looks as if these modes have been added since 1.4 to be consistent with the new io classes (nio).
But the new SCJP exam has dropped IO, so for now we don't have to worry about them.
I suggest that you use the earlier documentation if you are taking the 1.2 exam.
But you have made a good observation, this needs more research.

The API say that metadata could be things like the last time the file was accessed, type of content etc.
